BISHOP'S UNIVERSITY
Older than Canada itself, Bishop's was established in 1843
In 1843, the foundersdeclared their intention “to offer to the country a sound and liberal education.” To this day, Bishop's primary focus remains teaching and the liberal education of undergraduate students.
Nestled in the English borough of Lennoxville in the safe, friendly, culturally diverse city of Sherbrooke, an hour and a half from Montreal, Bishop's is an English university offering programs in Business, Education, Natural Science, Social Sciences and the Humanities.
Big enough to explore something new every day; small enough that you'll always be running into someone you know.
Bishop's has exceptional indoor and outdoor facilities that cater to the 3,000+ people who live, work and study here every day. Bishop's campus is spread out over a stunning 550 acres of land. The university's facilities include seven residence halls, two libraries, two theatres, state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratory and athletic facilities, an ice rink, a historic chapel, music recital hall, and daycare centre. A duck pond and wildlife refuge, 10 tennis courts, an outdoor pool, and golf course are also found on the school grounds.
Many of Bishop's studentschoose to stay on-campus during their studies.Residence is guaranteed for first year students who meet the application deadline.Athletics, recreation and intramural sports are a big part of Bishop's culture. All Bishop's students automatically receive a membership to the sports centre.Students are encouraged to participate in the 100+ clubs and societies on campus.
At Bishop's you'll be encouraged to explore and expand on your interests both inside and outside the classroom. Why? Because, as Mr. Scott Duguay, Bishop's Director Enrolment Management, points out,“joining a club is a great way to gain social confidence, experiment with the big ideas you are brushing up against in the classroom, and contribute to the community and campus life.”
Preparing for Success: The Value ofLiberal Education
A liberal education can empower individuals to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. It prepares students for success in their future careers.
A Bishop's degree means you will acquire a marketable, job-ready specialization in one area and also develop strong intellectual and practical skills such as written and interpersonal communication and analytical problem-solving skills.
Bishop's University Principal, Michael Goldbloom describes the benefits, “employers worldwide consistently express a preference for students who can communicate effectively, think critically and bring creative solutions to the table…a Bishop's education is a solid foundation that will serve you well in the ever-changing global job market.”
Great research informs first-rate teaching at Bishop's. Professors choose to teach at Bishop's because they are as committed to teaching as they are to research. Many undergraduate students get involved in research initiatives —an opportunity unheard of, at larger universities.
Small class sizes help to ensure a successful transition to Canada.Bishop's enrolment of 2,500 studentsmeans that the average class size in 1st and 2nd year classes is 29. The average class size in 3rd and 4thyear classes is 19.
Students come to Bishop's from over 50 countries all around the world. You will not only make friends with Canadians but with students from all continents, making your experience truly international.
Bishop's Students continually report being some of the most satisfied students in the country. Over 90% of senior-year Bishop's Students indicate they would go back to Bishop's if they had to do it all over again.
Bishop's offers several unique opportunities in Humanities and Social Sciences, including programs in Drama, Arts Administration (Music, Fine Arts or Dram in combination with Business studies), Environmental Studies & Geography, and Sports Studies.
Studying science at Bishop's leads students to research and work in cutting-edge fields like Health Science, Environmental and Forensic Science, Robotics, Astrophysics, or Computing and Game Development. In fact, 80% of Honours Science students at Bishop's continue to graduate school, 20% to professional programs such as Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy.
Studying Business Administration at the Williams School of Business at Bishop's means a hands-on, experiential business education. Business students enrolled in the Co-op Program receive academic credit for their placements AND a competitive salary.
