Kushiyara river banks teem with people

Thousands of villagers thronged the Kushiyara river banks at Ajmiriganj upazila of Habiganj on Thursday afternoon to witness a colourful boat race.
As many as 20 groups seated on well decorated racing boats from Habiganj, Sunamganj and neighbouring Kishoreganj district took part in the closely contested two hour event.
Thousands of enthusiastic people from neighbouring areas enjoyed the annual sporting event on the 2.5 km track from Noyanagar to Ronia while the young boatmen sang popular songs of Baul Samrat Shah Abdul Karim.
Fazlur Rahman of Nikli upozila in Kishoreganj district was declared champion while Shelu Miah of the same upazila came in second and Abdul Hannan of Baniachang upozila under Habiganj district was third.
Social Welfare Minister Enamul Haque Mostafa Shahid as chief guest handed over the prizes among the winners. Lawmakers Abu Zahir and Abdul Mazid Khan, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner ANM Zeaul Alam, Habiganj Deputy Commissioner Manindra Kishore Mazumder and Habiganj pourashava mayor GK Gaus were special guests.
The guests stressed that the annual event be held regularly.
