LETHBRIDGE COLLEGE
Lethbridge College
With one of the strongest economies in the world, and a higher per capita GDP than any other Canadian province - Alberta is a great place for any international student to kick-start a life – and successful career – in Canada.
With its renown and booming petroleum industry, strong agriculture and technology sectors, Alberta offers an exciting array of job prospects for talented and qualified newcomers. So what's the best way to successfully make your way in Alberta? Why, study there, of course!
Not far from the US border and the famous Rocky Mountains, Lethbridge College offers international students a chance to learn in one of Canada's sunniest cities - that's right, lots of sunshine and fresh air! Originally founded in 1957, Lethbridge College opened as Canada's first ever public community college and today, the institution hosts more than 4,000 students each year.
Mita Chowdhury's decision to go to college in Canada was a natural choice. Chowdhury, 28, moved from Bangladesh to Canada in 2009 after getting married. Her choice to attend college rather than university also came easy. “There are many reasons why I chose college over university,” says Chowdhury. “Tuition fees at college are less expensive than university. Also, I like the teaching system at college. There are small classes and I can talk with my instructors. They help me succeed.”
Chowdhury found Lethbridge an easy city in which to go to school. Her hometown in Bangladesh, Hobigonj, is small, and she likes the small size of Lethbridge. Living costs are much less expensive than large cities and it is not crowded.
Office Administration is a great program for Chowdhury because she will be able to balance her career with being a mom. “At first, I was nervous, but everyone was friendly. I felt like I belonged.” Chowdhury also chose to come to Lethbridge College because there is a daycare. “I can balance being a mom and a student,” she says.
Chowdhury has grown to enjoy living in Canada and her classes at the college. In the future, Chowdhury would like to be an Administrative Assistant at the hospital or at Lethbridge College. “I like it here,” she says. “It is beautiful. The mountains are amazing and Lethbridge is the perfect size.” Chowdhury encourages students to come to Canada and Lethbridge College. “You will love it here,” she says.

University credit transfer options
Mita Chowdhury
In many programs, students can transfer credits toward the completion of a university degree. This pathway provides the opportunity to graduate with a college diploma, work in Canada, and then return to school to complete a university degree. “It takes a little longer, but it spreads the cost out over a longer period of time, during which the student can gain valuable work experience,” says CUAC Director Student Recruitment, Mr. Jason Brennan. The credit transfer option at can be especially valuable for students and families who know that they might not be able to afford three or four consecutive years of study abroad. “It basically takes the long term goal – a Canadian university degreeand segments the plan into study-work-study portions,” says Mr. Brennan. “At the end of the day, the student earns the diploma, the degree and is in advantageous position for future employment.”
