STAR Diary

Being a student of Scholastica in Mirpur, I have to travel through the Mirpur Kafrul road to reach my school. The Mirpur Kafrul road starts from "Kachu Khet" (Cantonment) and ends at Mirpur 10. It is quite a hassle for me and all other commuters who travel along this road as it is in a terrible condition. Due to the bad condition of the road, people are forced to suffer the severe traffic situation everyday. As a result, I am often late to school. I have often seen workers laying brick beds on the road, attempting to patch the road. However, after a few days the road returns to its old shape as the materials to fix the road are unsustainable. I hope that more people will be concerned about this and take steps to help solve the problem. I earnestly request the concerned authorities to take immediate action to repair the road permanently. Shafkat Wahid Scholastica, Dhaka A Bangladeshi Prayer The garment workers were recently sanctioned a minimum wage of Tk. 5,300, which seemed almost like a handout from the Prime Minister. The workers seem unhappy and are still voicing their demand for Tk. 8,000. This is a very important issue for our future economic growth and needless to say, it is important to keep the improvement of social security on track. But the opposition seems insouciant about the whole matter. Their party as well as the Awami League is heavily dependent on contributions from the apparel industry. This is a national crisis of enormous proportions. In a civilized country one would expect a bi-partisan approach for finding a solution to keep the economy from stumbling. But here, it is given that all such problems are a headache for the standing government, while the opposition remains in a relentless pursuit for ascension to power, a position that prints money till now. The same would happen when the current opposition forms the government, if ever. God, forget the queen and save our country instead. S M Shahrukh Via Email
