Triumph of Good over Evil
Amidst recitation of mantras and chanting of shlokas, the idol of the goddess Durga was installed at different Puja Pandals in Chittagong on October 10 on the occasion of Maha Shasthi. Prior to the festival, skilled artisans prepare clay models of the divine mother. During the five-day celebration devotees take part in special ceremonies, rituals, fasting and festivities. People buy new clothes, prepare delicious sweets and buy gifts for family and friends and hope for peace and happiness for all. The festival of Durga Puja marks the victory of Durga over the demon Mahishashura, and symbolises the victory of good over evil. Bijoya Dashami marked the end of the celebration on October 14 and the idol of the goddess Durga was taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with singing and dancing to be immersed in the sea.
