WHY CANADA
Top 10 Things to Know About Studying in Canada
When it comes to making the decision to attend university, there are a lot of options and questions to consider. The Canadian University Application Centre, or CUAC, knows all about these questions, and has many answers. It should – considering the fifteen years of experience advising international students in Bangladesh and around the world. In fact, since 1998, the CUAC Dhaka office has assisted nearly 1,100 Bangladeshis to pursue studies in Canada.
What does the CUAC do?
Coming to a CUAC office gives you the chance to ask all your most important questions about Canadian study options and 'life in Canada'. Taking into account each student's individual interests, strengths, and career goals, CUAC staff help students to narrow down the choices, pick the best programs and institution for them, plus fill out applications, and make all the final arrangements, in order to ensure the smoothest experience possible.
In addition to contacting the CUAC Dhaka office, here are ten important things that students should know about study in Canada.
1. Almost all universities and most colleges in Canada are public universities, publically-funded and publically accredited.
An undergraduate degree earned atany public institution in Canada will be recognized around the world. A college diploma earned at a public college will be recognized by Canadian employers as having provided specific and valuable skills and training.
2. Great value. International student tuition in Canada is inexpensive relative to the many other countries.
The majority of international undergraduate tuition rates are between $12,000 and $18,000 per full academic year. Tuition fees in the United States are often double or triple those in Canada.
3. Only Canadaoffers the broad range of work opportunities granted to bona fide and academically successful international students.
International students are legally able to take up part-time jobs, either on or off campus, during their studies and can work in Canada after graduation.
4. It is relatively easy to gain admission to undergraduate programs in Canada.
A very good student in Bangladesh might struggle to find admission to their institution of choice at home, but that same student might bea scholarship award recipient in Canada.
5. It is relatively difficult to gain admission to professional programs in Canada – medicine, dentistry, architecture, law and others.
Most of these programs are not direct entry, meaning you must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study and often a first degree before applying. Many of these programs are closed to international students or have limited places. Contact CUAC and know the facts.
6. Canada has a stable and growing economy and vast resources.
A Canadian post-secondary education, whether at a university or college, can provide the skills and knowledge required to find success in Canada.
7. Canada's public colleges are outstanding choices for students.
Perceptions of college diplomas as second class are wrong. Often, colleges are the best choice for specific types of study that can only be found at colleges. College students have very high post-graduation employment rates and can often transfer to a university to complete a degree program.
8. You do not have to pay for the information and advice you need to make the right choices for you.
Fair, balanced and free advice and counselling is available to students direct from universities and colleges and from organizations like CUAC.
9. Bigger is not necessarily better.
A student can save up to $40,000 in tuition for the same four-year degree just by choosing a smaller university. A smaller university can also offer smaller class sizes, greater access to professors, undergraduate research opportunities, and smaller cities and smaller campuses with a great sense of community and safety.
10. The BEST university or college is the university or college that is best for you.
Taking all factors into consideration, selecting the right university or college is really a question of which will offer the best environment for you to excel and distinguish yourself.
Third-party university rankings, which are often based on a universities research capacity and breadth of graduate programs, are a very poor substitute for taking far more important factors into consideration – factors that can and will make a difference in the student's success.
Cost, program, location, size and type of institution, campus community and accommodations, your own aptitudes and interests, proximity to family and friends, and your own personality and ability to adjust to different environments are all factors in making the right decision for you.
