A "Baggy Green" cap worn by Don Bradman during a series against India in 1947-48 was sold for $460,000 at a Gold Coast auction on Monday, fetching the highest price for a cap sported by the great Australian batsman.

The tattered garment -- almost 80 years old -- was sun-faded, showed signs of "insect damage" and had a torn peak.

Bradman donned the woollen cap during India's 1947-48 tour of Australia, which marked the touring side's first Tests on foreign soil after gaining independence.

If he had lived, the greatest cricketer of all time, Sir “Don” Bradman of Australia would have celebrated his 107th birthday today.
