A powerful earthquake hit a broad swathe of northeastern Japan yesterday, tangling communications and rocking buildings as far away as Tokyo about 280 miles to the south, but there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries.

The Meteorological Agency said the quake measured seven on the open-ended Richter scale, about the same strength as a devastating quake in the Japanese city of Kobe eight years ago.
