Three fishermen were killed and at least 40 are missing as their trawlers sank in the Bay near Cox's Bazar due to storm and downpour on Sunday.

The meteorological office here said winds rising up to 75 kilometres per hour accompanied with downpour whipped up tidal surges that inundated vast areas in Cox's Bazar town, Sadar upazila, Ramu, Chokoria, Ukhia, Moheskhali and Kutubdia upazilas.

Fishing trawler association sources said at least eight trawlers sank in the rough Bay.

Thirty-two fishermen reached the shore Monday evening by swimming and with the help of other fishing boats, they said.

Bodies of the three missing fishermen were found near Cox's Bazar beach on Monday.

Local people and police recovered the bodies, identified as those of Syed Alam, 25, Mounjur Alam, 40 and Rafiq Ahmed, 30.

The survivors said fishing is still risky as the sea is rough.

At least 40,000 people are marooned in Kutubdia and Moheskhali upazilas, sources there claimed.

The Cox's Bazar meteorological office recorded 140 mm rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

The heavy rain paralysed life in Cox's Bazar.
