'Fake' doctor in jail for cheating patients
Swapan Kumar Majumdar of Nakipur village in Shyannagar upazila, one of the three fake doctors accused of cheating patients, appeared before court and prayed for bail recently.
Magistrate Ibrahim Khan rejected the bail prayer and sent him to jail hajat.
A case was filed with Shyamnagar thana against the three 'fake' doctors who had well furnished chambers at Shyamnagar upazila headquarters.
The two others are Amjad Hossain of Sora village and Shahjahan Ali of Rasulpur village in Satkhira Sadar upazila.
Though they have no academic qualification, they used degrees like MBBS and MD after their names on pads, it is alleged.
When their forgery was published earlier in newspapers including The Daily Star, Satkhira Civil Surgeon SM Mostofa Anowar formed an inquiry committee headed by the Shyamnagar upazila health and family planning officer.
After investigation, the civil surgeon recommended action against them for cheating patients.
Shyamnagar thana Sub-inspector Faisal Jamal filed a case against the three.
Swapan Majumdar appeared before court but the rest two wet into hiding.
The Satkhirta unit of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) earlier identified nine other 'fake' doctors in the district who were cheating patients for long in the same way.
The BMA recommended action against them.
Their forgery was also published in national and local dailies.
But the authorities have not yet taken any action against the nine 'fake' doctors for reasons unknown.
