Palm oil smuggled out thru' Satkhira border

Imported palm oil is being smuggled to India through several border points.

Market sources said huge quantities of palm oil are being smuggled out every day as its price is much higher on the other side of the border.

This has increased price of the item in local markets. Palm oil sells at Tk 38 per kilogram in markets in the district. The smugglers purchase it at Tk 40 to 42, the sources said.

It is smuggled through Koikhali, Bhatshala, Khanjia, under Kaliganj Upazila, Noapara, Town Sripur, Parulia, Padma Shakra border points under Debhata Upazila and Bhomra, Gazipur, Boikari under Sadar Upazila, Garakhali, Keragachi, Toluigachi, Bhadiali, and Madra points under Kalaroa Upazila.

Indian smugglers prefer Bangladeshi palm oil as it is refined, they said.

There are open markets of Bangladeshi palm oil in Hashnabad, Habashpur, Tayali, Balti, Amudia, Doyaknda, Etinda, Ghozadanga, Boshirhat and Barashat Bazar in India, they added.

The smuggling is taking place in collusion with s section of corrupt law enforcers, they said.
