Most of the non-government colleges under Chittagong Education Board (CEB) are facing acute student crisis this year due to poor pass percentage in the last Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination.

The pass percentage was 35.12 under the CEB. The crisis is more for colleges in rural areas than in urban areas. Many colleges in rural areas will not get any student this year, Board sources said.

Previously, a few colleges in remote rural area faced student crisis and could not even fill the quota. The quality of education has also been degraded because of such mushrooming colleges.

Admission to colleges begun last month and is nearly complete in most of the government colleges.

There are 156 colleges under Chittagong Board. On an average, one college has 900 seats in Science, Arts and Commerce groups. A total of 46,800 students are needed to fill the quota of 156 colleges. But only 24,061 students passed the SSC examination this year.

A teacher at Islamia College seeking anonymity said they could not enrol fifty percent of the required number of students so far. "We are waiting for completion of admission at government colleges". He said his college admitted 1,500 students against 2,400 seats last year. The figure this year will be lesser.

Moreover, some of the government colleges might not be able to fill their seats this year.

When contacted, principal of Hazi Mohammed Mohsin College Prof Mohammed Jasim Uddin said, "I heard that a large number of non- government colleges got only 10 to 15 students this year".
