BNP men bag 3 UP posts, AL 2

BNP backed candidates bagged three chairman posts while a dissident Awami League man got one in the election held on Sunday in five union parishads in Magura Sadar upazila.

The rest one went to an AL backed candidate.

Unofficials polls results were announced Sunday night.

The three BNP men aren Abu Bakar Master in Moghi union, Amaresh Chandra Biswas in Atharokhada union and Md Oliar Rahman in Jagdal union.

The AL man is Abdus Sattar Molla in Chanhial union and the dissident AL man is Meer Abdul Kuddus in kashundi union.

Meanwhile post polls violence at Tila and Bhabanhati villages under Moghi union has panicked the villagers.

Many villagers have fled homes fearing further attack.

"Many of my supporters have already left their homes fearing fresh attack," AL-backed defeated chairman candidate in Moghi union Abdul Hai Sarder told this correspondent during a visit to the villages yesterday.

Locals said, there has been a long-standing rivalry between the newly elected chairman Abu Bakar and former Chairman Abdul Hai Sarder.

They said some people, allegedly supporters of Abu Bakar, attacked and destroyed seven houses including that of Abdul Hai at Tila and Bhabanhati villages yesterday morning and beat at least up 12 people.

On information, ASI Sarwar reached the spots and brought the situation under control.

No case was lodged and none was arrested

When contacted, Sup-erintendent of Police Biswas Afzal Hossain said he ordered deployment of police in the area to keep the situation under control.
