A govt college indeed !

There are two teachers against 12 posts and about 200 students.

The principal-in-charge, Associate Professor Md Fazley Haque, no longer stays at a college room at night to do the job of a night guard it. A night guard was appointed recently under local management.

The only other teacher, Sabbir Ahmed of History, does all office work in addition to his normal responsibility as there is no clerk.

This is Jakiganj Government College in Sylhet.

Science faculty was opened and posts of teacher created recently. But none has been posted.

The college, located at Jakiganj upazila headquarters about 100 kilometres off the divisional city, was established in 1985 and was made a government college in 1988.

Posts of teachers for Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Mathematics were created recently, but no teacher was posted. So, there is no student in science department.

Computer Science and Biology are yet to be introduced though there is demand for these subjects.

There is no teacher for compulsory subjects like, Bangla and English as well as for Political Science, Economics, Accounting or Management. The only post of office assistant and three posts of office bearer are vacant for long.

Subjects like Islamic History, Islamic Studies, Social Welfare, Social Science are yet to be opened.

As there is no post of assistant professor, any teacher getting promotion has to leave the college.

The students recently put up road barricades demanding immediate posting of teachers. Officials accompanied by ruling party leaders assured them of all possible steps for that. They withdrew the barricade. The matter ended there.

Local people said the college, if properly equipped, could draw a good number of students as there is no other college in the area.

Recently, a local philanthropist bought some lands and donated those for the college for its development, they said.
