Villagers clash in Magura, 35 hurt

At least 35 people were injured, 14 of them seriously, and 16 houses ransacked during a clash between two rival groups at Dhonpara village in Magura Sadar upazila on Tuesday.

The seriously injured people include two women.

The groups, one led by Golam Ali Mandal and the other by Serajul Biswas, clashed with lethal weapons over establishment of supremacy in the village, police and local people said. The two are rivals for long, they said.

The clashes ensued after some villagers belonging to one group were beaten up by their rivals on Monday following an altercation over a football.

The seriously injured people were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital. They are Hosen Mondal, 50, Kayum Molla 40, Surat Ali 50, Laltu, 20, Mokaddes, 50, Shaheen, 25, Nurul Joarder, 40, Shahida, 35, Saleha, 40, Yunus Ali, 38, Kamrul, 25, Afsar Mandal, 35, Abul Kashem 50 and Ebadat Molla, 35.

At one stage, the rival groups started damaging each other's houses and looting valuables.

Police reached the spot after the clash that lasted for about two hours in the morning. But no case was lodged and none arrested till Tuesday afternoon.
