Poura polls : AL does better than Alliance in Sylhet

The AL performed better in the elections held in May despite intra-party conflict spearheaded by party presidium members Abdus Samad Azad and Suranjeet Sengupta.

According to polls result, three AL candidates were elected chairman. They are Monirul Moijdin of Sunamganj Pourasabha, Professor Tofazzal Hussain of Nabiganj Pourasabha in Habiganj district and Shah Mohammed Muslim of Madhabpur Pourasabha in Habiganj district.

BNP led Four-party Alliance got two posts of chairman. They are BNP leader Fayzul Karim Mayun of Moulvibazar Pourasabha and BNP leader GK Gous of Habiganj Pourasabha.

However, all the chairman candidates of opposition parties rejected the result in the two municipalities blaming widespread irregularities, rigging and demanded reelection.

Two candidates of Ershad's Jatiya Party were elected chairmen. They are Kamal Ahmed Juned of Kulaura Pourasabha in Moulvi-bazar district and Jahir Ahmed of Shayestaganj Pourasabha in Habi-ganj district.

According to election result of seven municipalities including three district level municipalities, 10 AL chairman candidates got 54,497 votes unitedly. Nine BNP leaders contested for chairmanship in seven municipalities and all of them got 37920 votes unitedly.

More than one AL candidates contested for chairmanship in Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Madhabpur municipalities. As a result, party leaders and workers were divided and fought against each other.

Political observers here have apprehended that if the Awami League high command fails to tackle the situation and if the present trend continues, the party might face debacle in future polls in the division.

Election was not held in any municipality in Sylhet district.
