Beaten to death for one taka

Protesting the incident, angry rickshawpullers observed a half-day strike in the town and staged demonstrations on Sunday.

Police said Rickshawpuller Habibur Rahman, 30, had taken rtwo persons to Adalat Para from Launch Ghat Friday evening. He demanded Tk six as fare. The unidentified passengers gave him Tk five.

At one stage of an altercation over the fare, the two persons beat him severely and escaped leaving him there.

On information, Habib's wife took him to Patuakhali Sadar Hospital where he died at about 4 am yesterday. Habib is the son of one Sekander Ali in the town.

Protesting the incident, several hundred rickshaw-pullers brought out a procession in the town yesterday.
