Death threat to journo for publishing news

Munshi Torikul Islam, Kushtia correspondent of UNB (United News of Bangladesh) and daily Ajker Kagoj and Executive Editor of local daily Ajker Sutropat', is now on the run to save his life.

Torikul filed a GD (general dairy) with police against Ripon, son of late Mofazzel Hossain and Mukter, son of Mokbul Hossain and Dr Aminul Haq Ratan, owner of Tofazzel Hossain Health Clinic in the town. Ratan is an Awami League leader.

The Ajker Sutropat published a report earlier that Dr Ratan gave a certificate to a government employee to save him from punishment. The official was arrested last month for an alleged offence, confined in jail for six days and then served with a show-cause notice.

But the doctor certified that the employee was sick and was under treatment at his clinic.

As the news was published, the doctor warned him, Torikul alleged in the GD.

On Thursday in the evening, Ripon and Mukter, known for criminal activities in the town, went to his house and shouted for publishing the news. He fled home.

The gang demanded Tk 10 lakh from him and threatened him with death.

When contacted, the duty officer at Kushtia Sadar thana said he does not know anything about the matter.
