NGOs emerge as 'viable third sector'

Their contribution to economic development and poverty alleviation could not be over emphasised, speakers said at two roundtables held in Sylhet and Bogra on July 6 and 8, says a press release.

The roundtables on NGO Governance Principles were jointly organised by the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and the Federation of NGOs in Bangladesh (FNB). Josephine Oguta of BEI was the main speaker.

Over 50 NGOs each from greater Sylhet and greater Bogra districts took part in the pgorammes.

With the second generation of entrepreneurs entering this sector, the need now was to ensure continuity and sustainability of these organisations. She said NGO governance principles were based on four cornerstones of governance. These are stewardship, accountability, transparency and internal management.

It is desirable that the NGO Governing Board should be totally separated from the Management which should be accountable to the Board.
