VAT: Rajshahi traders declare month-long protest

Leaders of RTAC, an alliance of 32 trade bodies here announced the programme at a press conference held at its office at Shaheb Bazaar in the city.

The programme includs a half-day strike on August 22, four-hour hunger strike throughout the district on July 27 and formation of a human chain at the Zero point on August 14.

Besides, meetings and processions will be held at every hat and bazaar in the district from July 17, submission of memorandum to prime minister and finance minister through local authorities on July 20 and holding a public meeting at Sheheb Bazaar on August 7.

RTAC general secretary Farid Mamud Hasan read out a written statement in the press conference where RTAC president Mosharraf Hossain Akhunjee, advisor Ziaur Rahman were present, among others.

The traders termed Rajshahi as an under- developed and neglected city where no industry was set up since independence and 90 per cent of local traders are in debt.

"In such a situation, fresh VAT is a burden to us (traders)".

"VAT are usually paid when products are purchased from producers and importers. But illogical imposition of VAT will enhance product prices beyond buyers' capacity also affecting traders," the statement said.

"Supply of natural gas to Rajshahi through pipeline is a must for the region's socio-economic development and expansion of business by setting up of new industries," the statement added.
