Habiganj-Sylhet bus strike from today

This was announced by leaders of Habiganj Sarak Paribahan Malik Sramik Oikya Parishad at a press conference held at Habiganj Press Club on Sunday.

The leaders demanded immediate arrest of alleged criminal Ismail and his accomplices in Moulvibazar town and security of vehicles plying the route through Moulvibazar town. The Parishad's General Secretary Sajib Ali read out a written statement at the press conference. Its president Md Fazlur Rahman Chowdhury, former chairman of Habiganj Pourashava Shahid Chowdhury and general secretary of Bus Malik Samity Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury were also present. They said bus service in the route was stopped on July 5 following attack on some transport workers and leaders from Habiganj in Moulvibazar town.

It resumed on July 10 after a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and the Police Superintendent-in-charge of Habiganj on July 9. But the harassment continued unabated.

They said they will not allow buses from other districts to ply through Habiganj. They alleged that in recent days, several vehicles from Habiganj were damaged and workers assaulted by some drivers and workers in Moulvibazar.

The matter was brought to the notice of Moulvibazar district administration, but to no effect, they alleged.

Transport leaders of Moulvibazar when contacted refuted all the allegation. Buses from Habiganj do not maintain timetable and stop at unscheduled places, they claimed.

The matter was discussed at a meeting of the Sylhet Division Law and Order Committee on July 7, where Divisional Commissioner Abdus Salam Khan requested Habiganj and Moulvibazar district administrations to settle the dispute.
