Journalist Mukul muder case revived after 20 months

A Division Bench of the High Court withdrew the quashment order of another Bench on August 8, paving the way for restart of proceeding of the case, court sources said here.

R M Saiful Alam Mukul, editor of the daily Runner published from Jessore, was killed as some assailants hurled bomb and shot him when he was going to his office on the night of August 30, 1998.

Hafiza Akhtar Shirin, widow of Mukul, lodged a case with Kotwali police station next day against some unidentified killers.

The investigation officer of the case submitted a charge sheet on April 23, 1999 accusing 22 people including Tariqul Islam, now Minister for Forest and Environment.

The complainant filed a petition with the Magistrate Court against the charge sheet. The court rejected the petition in July 1999. Then the complainant filed a petition with the Sessions Judge's court for revision. The Judge Court also rejected the revision petition on February 27, 2001.

Hafiza Aktar Shirin then filed a 'miscase' with the High Court against the rejection order of the Judge Court.

On June 17, 2001 a Bench of the High Court comprising Justice Md. Hamidul Haque and Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana issued rule on the government and gave a quashment order.
