Earlier, CUTA gave an ultimatum to the CU authorities for cancellation of "unlawful promotion" of Jamaat-e-Islami- backed Associate Professor of Geography department Dr Abu Tyeb Chowdhury and appointment of 57 teachers, allegedly done in violation of Planning Committee's recommendations.

CU authorities had however assured the CUTA leaders that their demand would be considered at the Syndicate meeting on August 21. But the meeting ignored the demands, CUTA leaders alleged.

Mentionably, the Selection Board of Geography Department had recommended promotion of Dr. Abu Tayeb to the post of Professor.

As per the existing university rules, five years' experience as Associate Professor is mandatory for promotion to the post of Professor. But Dr. Abu Tayeb has only two years' experience, including one year's service on ad-hoc basis, sources said.
