Bid to occupy waterbody in Kishoregonj: 30 hurt

At least 30 people were injured, some of them critically, when a group of about 400 equipped with sharp weapons attacked Banail and Sohagpur villages in Bawa Bill in Tarail upazila in Kishoregonj on Sunday, apparently to occupy the waterbody.

The attackers allegedly led by Sharif Uddin Buyan, Chairman of Rowti Union Parishad, also looted Tk five lakh fishes from the waterbody, police and witnesses said.

Sources in the area said the waterbody is owned by about 20 families of Banail and Sohagpur villages.

Sharif Uddin was trying to occupying the waterbody for long. On Sunday, he hired musclemen from Harogati and Kowli villages and swooped on the two villages.

Five of the injured have been admitted to Kishoregonj Sadar Hospital. They are Saiful, Mokbul, Dulal, Harash and Kala Miah.

The attackers also damaged Aman seedbeds.

A case was filed with Tarial police station.

Victims in the two villages alleged that police did not go to the spot despite being informed.

When contacted, both Tarail Upazila Nirbahi Officer Saiful Islam and Tarial thana Officer-in-Charge Gobinda Chandra Das said action will be taken against the attackers.
