Drug peddlers will be caught as a prepared list, Sadar thana Officer-in-Charge Md Ismail told this correspondent.

Nine drug peddlers were arrested and 20 kilograms of hemp recovered on the first day, he said.

Before launching of the operation on orders from Police Superintendent ATM Tarek, several meetings were held in different areas of the town and the district, the OC said.

The programme has been launched as the district, because of its location, is a route for drug peddlers, he said.

Brahmanbaria is close to the border. The DhakaChittagong and DhakaSylhet highways and railways pass through the district. Drug smugglers in different districts use Brahmanbaria as transit for drug smuggling.

Drug smugglers including women are frequently arrested at different places on the highways.

To create awareness against drug use, the Brahmanbaria Dhumpan O Madak Birudi Sangatahan (an anti-drug committee) and police held at least 30 meetings in different areas of the district in the last six months. The SP was the chief guest at most of the meetings.
