50 hurt in Charghat pre-polls clash

The clash took place as supporters of Prof Yunus barricaded the road when Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu MP and other BNP leaders were going to address a scheduled polls projection meeting for a BNP candidate Zakirul Islam at Shardah Degree College ground.

Police in their bid to disperse the rebel BNP candidate's supporters clubbing them and fired two shots in the air. This ensued the clash, police and witnesses said.

Brick bats were hurled at police during the clash.

Later BDR led by a magistrate rushed there and brought the situation under control.

Elections of Charghat municipality will be held today.
