Nawaz Sharif seeks to return home to bury his father
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, exiled to Saudi Arabia four years ago after being deposed in a military coup, is seeking a brief return to Pakistan to bury his father, his spokesman told AFP yesterday.
Mian Mohammad Sharif, 85, who was also in exile, died at a hospital in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah late Friday.
Siddiqul Farooq, a spokesman for Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party, said Mian Sharif would be laid to rest near the eastern city of Lahore in the town of Raiwind early next week.
Party officials said the body was likely to be flown to Pakistan on Sunday after being taken for prayers at Mecca, Islam's holiest shrine near Jeddah.
