Call to build social movement against acid throwers

The discussion was organised jointly by a local NGO, Swadesh and a national NGO, Action Aid Bangladesh. It was held at Satkhira Sadar upazila auditorium.

At least 36 acid victims from seven upazilas attended the discussion.

Besides the victims, it was also addressed by Principal Asit Kumar Mozumdar, Action Aid Bangladesh representative Nurun Nahar, Swadesh Advisor SM Saidur Rahman and journalist Kalyan Banerjee.

The discussion was conduct by Swadesh Executive Director Madhab Chandra Dutt.

The speakers emphasised on public motivation to resist acid terrorists while the acid victims urged all to stand beside them so that acid terrorists are punished. They said that most of the criminals are being acquitted for lack of witnesses who are being threatened by the offenders.

Terming acid terrorists as enemies of society, some speakers even expressed their determination for resisting acid throwers at the cost of their lives. They said acid throwers not only harm victims but also ruin their family. They emphasised the need for identifying them and producing them before the court. Proper witnesses should also be submitted before the court for their exemplary punishment, they said.

Some speakers said the local administration may play a vital role by taking punitive action against the acid terrorists.

On conclusion it was decided that a three-day seminar will be held at Satkhira from December 28 to 30.

Acid victims Prabhati Rani Mridha, 18, of village Atulia in Shyamnagar upazila, Anjuara khatun of village Mohandi in Tala upazila, Helena Parvin of village Baichana in Sadar upazila, Johra Khatun of village Shovnali in Assasuni upazila, Sabina Yasmin of village Kulia in Debhata upazila, Rehana of village Moutala in Kaligonj upazila, Moslem Ali in Tala upazila, Ayub Ansari in Shyamnagar uapzila, Safura Khatun in Sadar upazila and others attended the discussion meeting.
