Women demonstrate for rights in B'baria

Shinrail Kandi Dustha Mohila Kalyan Samity, Durbar Network and Nari Pakkha jointly organised the procession on the occasion of International Protest Day against Repression on Women.

The processionists also carried colourful banners and posters. They chanted slogans in favour of their rights.

After the procession the processionists converged in front of Chasti Bhaban at Shimrail Kadi in Brahmanbaria Pourasabha.

A discussion meeting was held there which was presided over by Ayesha Khanam, chairperson of Durbar Network.

Additional police super (ASP) Md JohongirHossain was the chief guest while Bashira Khatun, Headmistress of Sabera Sabhan Government High School was present as special guest.

The meeting was addressed among other by Rahima Khatun, district officer of women affairs, Pawsha Ara, chairperson of Thohar women association, Roju Khatun and woman commissioners of Brahmanbaria Pourashbha, Salina Chowdhury Sadek Sarwar, Rejawl Karim, Safia Khalun and Rajina Akter.

Meanwhile, representatives of different NGOs like ASA, Proshika and BRAC were also present in the meeting.

The discussion meeting informed that at least 371 women were killed from January to September this year while 156 women committed suicide during the period. At the same time 155 women were abducted and 42 domestic helps were tortured and 78 'fatwa' were given against women, speakers said in the meeting. They also informed 395 women were raped at different places of the country from January to September.
