Maize farming gains popularity in Sherpur

Maize cultivation gains popularity in all the upazilas of Sherpur district during the last five years.

Farmers here are bringing more and more lands under maize farming, according to sources in the agriculture office.

As part of government's crop diversification programme, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is motivating farmers through demonstration plots.

Maize is cultivated on 20 lakh acres of land countrywide annually, according to agricultural experts. The demand for maize in the country is 2.90 lakh tons while the demand will be 4.80 lakh tons in near future, he said.

A source in the DAE said in the ongoing season the crop is being

cultivated on 1,400 acres of land. The production target has been earmarked at between 1.40 to 2 lakh maunds.
