Steps taken to develop Patuakhali Airport

The airport was built on 16,35 acres of 'Eidgah' land at a cost of Tk 2.60 crore in Laukthi area, about a kilometre north of here in 1989. The Agricuture Ministry built it for spraying medicine on cropland through ATP plane.

Patuakhali Public Works Department (PWD) sources said the airport was already handed over to the Civil Aviation authorities from the Agriculture Ministry. The Civil Aviation authority acquired 10 acres of land to extend the runway by 1,800 feet more. After extension the length of the runway will be 3,835 feet. It will enable Biman's fleet to land and fly from here on commercial basis, sources said.

A decision to extend the runway was taken at a cabinet meeting on February 10, in 1990, but the work was stalled for a long time.
