Steps sought to check river erosion in Gaibandha
The chairmen of three unions--Kamarjani, Kanchipara and Uria-- held a press conference at Gaibandha Press Club demanding steps for protecting the area from the gourge of the river on Friday.
They called upon the prime minister to take special measure to check the menace.
Last week, about 500 homeless families were shifted to safer places.
The Brahmaputra is now only four kilometre off the district town. It may engulf the pourashava within short period if the erosion is not checked immediately.
Prime Minister visited erosion affected Gaibandha Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas on July 7 in 1986. During her visit she directed the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) authorities to take immediate measure to check erosion. The BWDB authorities put forward a Tk 160 crore project to the Ministry of Flood Control, but to no effect.
