23 killed in Kazakh coal mine blast
Twenty-three coal miners died yesterday when a methane gas blast tore through a mine owned by a global Indian steel producer in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan, the latest accident to strike the Soviet-era industry.
The explosion tore through one of the tunnels some 50 metres (165 feet) below ground as the night shift crew arrived for work at the Shakhtinskaya mine in the central steppe region of Karaghandy.
The region, which produces much of the coal for this nation of 15 million people, has been hit by similar accidents in the past, most recently in 2002 when 17 people were killed.
