Demolition of old buildings to reduce tremor losses
Seventy per cent structures are vulnerable in the country and earthquake may collapse 20 per cent of the structures including educational institutions and healthcare centres.
This was told at a workshop on Earthquake and Disaster Management held in Chittagong on Tuesday.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Disaster Management Bureau jointly organised the workshop its CCC auditorium with its Acting Chief Executive Officer Mostafa Kamaluddin in the chair.
Speakers emphasized on immediate demolition of all vulnerable buildings. 'Otherwise the authorities concerned should renovate the buildings to escape possible casualties caused by tremor,' they added.
Everybody should abide by the building code and take precautionary measures for reduction of destruction during earthquake.
City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury opened the workshop.
