Islam ensures women's right Speakers at open dialogue say

But certain sections of so-called clerics are misinterpreting Islam and defaming the religion because they do not understand the spirit of Islam.

Women's security can be ensured and peace established in the present strife-torn society if Islam is understood properly and laws relating to women's rights are applied correctly, they said.

They also urged NGOs working for women rights to try to understand the spirit of Islam and create awareness about Islamic ideology instead of 'western concepts' to ensure women rights.

PALOK, a local NGO, organised the dialogue in corporation with Asia Foundation.

With its president Principal Altafunnesha in the chair, the dialogue was participated by, among others, Muslim Aid (UK) Country Director AS M Rasiduzzaman, Asia Foundation Programme Advisor M Sahajahan Kabir, Prof. Mukhlesur Rahman and Prof. Abul Kalam Patwary of Islamic University, Kushtia Bar Association President advocate Amirul Islam, Kushtia Law College Principle Matinul Haq Khan Choudhury, Kushtia Government Commercial College Principal Ali Mohosin, Kushtia LGED Executive Engineer AK Azad.

A large number of social workers, Imams of mosques, NGO workers, schoolteachers, madrassah teachers and representatives of professional groups attended the dialogue.

The first women lawyer in the district and Executive Director of PALOK advocate Nargis Choudhury moderated the discussion.

The speakers said only Islam gas given women the right to family property and their position in the family.
