Indian enclaves in Dinajpur 'safe haven for criminals'
Neither BDR (Bangladesh Rifles) nor police can trace them once they cross the border after committing crimes in Bangladesh, sources said.
Even Bangladeshis take shelter in the enclaves after committing crimes.
There are 12 enclaves in the two districts. These are Putimari, Daibata, Sharbari, Nataktopa, Garati, Singimari, Nazirgoaj, Balapara, Gaihata, Ghagraghata, Kotbazini and Shal, covering about 11, 232 acres of land with a total population of 16,205. Some of the smaller enclaves are several kilometres inside Bangladesh.
Police sources here said several incidents of crime, lodged by Bangladeshis, are recorded with bordering thanas in a week but the accused can not be caught as they take shelter in the enclaves. The crimes include robbery, extortion and theft.
When contacted, an official of 15 Rifle Battalion said they have informed BSF about the situation. Only BSF can nab the criminals, he said.
These enclave people are deprived of all facilities including healthcare, education and water supply, which are supposed to be provided by the Indian government.
There is virtually no administration in the enclaves by the Indian government.
The enclave people often move freely inside Bangladesh and avail facilities for their livelihood, local people along the border told this correspondent.
