Zia Fertiliser to resume production in a week

Production came to a halt here following damage in its Amonia plant by fire on Tuesday.

A six-member probe committee headed by the company's Director General (DG), Mizanur Rahman has been formed on Wednesday to investigate into the reason of fire.

A team of the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) high officials comprising Chief Engineer (MTS) TD Biswas and Chief Engineer (Construction) Chowdhury Md Anwarul Iqbal already visited the spot.

The loss might exceed Tk two crore, according to reliable sources.

The fire originating from a leakage of a gas pipeline engulfed the 'Start up Heater Coil' of the company's Amonia Plant. The flame rose to a height of about 50 to 60 feet creating great panic around the area.

Because of prompt action of factory engineers and fire fighters of Ashuganj and Bhairab, the fire extinguished within 40 minutes.

Although the factory's grand overhaul was done about eight months ago, yet it went out of order due to technical fault and fault in machinery for at least seven times in last four months. As a result, the company failed to produce its scheduled 1,600 metric tons (MT) of urea daily. Grabbing the situation, a group of dishonest fertiliser dealers are allegedly hoarding urea to make a windfall profit.
