'Save Mongla port, reopen closed mills'

Earlier at noon, a meeting was held at Mongla Port Auditorium to exchange views on agitation programmes to press their demands.

The other demands include establishment of a deep sea port at Akram Point, reopening of all closed jute mills and industries, gas supply, construction of an airport, rejuvenation of the export processing zone and preservation of the Sundarbans.

Presided over by Senior Vice-president of GKDACC Abdus Salam, the view-exchange meeting was addressed by, among others, Khulna city Mayor Sheikh Tayebur rahman, Khulna City Awami League President Talukdar Abdul Khaleque MP, Khulna City Ameer of Jamaat-e-Isami Mia Golam Parwar MP, Khulna City BNP President M Nurul Islam MP, Ali Asgar Lobi MP, Bagerhat district BNP President MAH Selim MP, Shah Mohammod Ruhul Quddus MP, central BNP leader Majedul Islam and President of Khulna Chamber of Commerce and Industry Munir Ahmed.

The meeting formed a 15-member Parliament Members' Action Coordination Committee for Development of Greater Khulna was formed with Mayor Shaikh Tayebur Rahman as its convenor and State Minister Amanullah Aman as Member Secretary.

The newly formed GKDPMACC will gear up the ongoing agitation to realise the 19-point demand.

Speakers of the meeting also demanded deployment of a Army or Rab unit at Mongla Port to contain crimes.

They also demanded of the government exemplary punishment of those responsible for causing damage to economic interest of Mongla Port.
