'Smugglers' led by BNP leader besiege Benapole BDR camp
Smugglers led by a BNP leader and a Union Parishad (UP) chairman on Sunday laid siege to a camp of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) at Benapole for release of a medicine smuggler.
According to the Commanding Officer (CO) of the 25th Battalion of (BDR), Col Hasan, BDR jawans caught a smuggler, Akhtar following seizure of smuggled Indian medicine worth Tk 1.5 lakh from a motorbike. Akhtar and another smuggler were carrying the medicine. However, Akhtar's accomplice fled away. The BDR men took him to their camp.
Hearing the news, Benapole UP Chairman and BNP leader Masudur Rahman along with a number of smugglers brought out a protest procession and surrounded the BDR camp demanding unconditional and immediate release of the arrested smuggler, the CO of the BDR battalion told this correspondent. Later, the smuggler was handed over to Benaple port police, he added.
