BFIDC Kaptai timber unit finally closed
It was closed on Friday following an order from the ministry of Environment and Forest.
The office and all establishments of BFIDC in the unit will remain locked.
The government closed it down saying it was a loss-making unit while its employees claimed that it was profit-earning. They alleged that there was a conspiracy by some vested quarters behind its closure to grab its property.
Set up in 1959, the 41-year old unit was known as the 'mother unit' of BFIDC as it supplied processed logs after extraction from the CHT hills.
Official records show that the unit earned Tk 34 lakh profit in 2003-2004 financial year.
