Culprits move freely under cops' nose

Some members of the Ahamadiyya community have fled the village after the beating and threat, made allegedly by activists of ruling coalition partner, local people told this correspondent during a visit to the area yesterday.

The villagers said those who beat the Ahamadiyya community man are moving freely in the area but police are not taking any action even after filing of a general diary (GD).

Sources in the district administration however said the situation in the area is normal.

This correspondent also talked to Sub Inspector (SI) Zafar Ahmed of Islamic University police station, who went to the area on Friday to probe the incident. He said the situation there is now under control.

Asked why the alleged attackers are not being arrested, he said, "The allegation is not fully proved".

According to source in the area, at least 40 members the Ahmadiyya community in the village had been leading a life virtually isolated from the society.

This correspondent also talked to some members of the Ahmadiyya community.

The situation worsened on Thursday when one of the members Muazzemwas beaten while preaching Ahmadiyya faith. He stays in Dhaka but his family lives in Bishnupur village. Muazzem came to the village on Tuesday. He was called out of home and beaten allegedly by Sahajahan, Rahajahan, Kamal and Madhu, all activists of Islami chhatra Shibir (ICS), student front of Jamaat-e-Islami, the villagers claimed.

Muazzaem went to Islamic University police station and wanted to file a case. But police took it as a general diary (GD).
