Landless in Satkhira to get lands soon, DC tells rally

Government lands will be distributed among landless people in nine villages in Kaligonj and Debhata upazilas within a month, Satkhira Deputy Commissioner Md Elias said at a big rally of landless people in Kaliganj on Friday.

"The government is committed to meet your demand to rehabilitate you and alleviate poverty," he said at the rally held at Baburabad. He also urged the landless people to help maintain law and order in the area.

The rally was organised by Debhata-Kaligonj Bhumihin Sangram Committee. Its president Wahab Ali Sardar was in the chair.

The DC was the chief guest at the rally, participated by several hundred lanless people.

Additional Deputy Commi-ssioner (ADC Revenue) Humayun Kabir, Kaligonj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sheikh Maniru-zzaman, Debhata UNO Ali Kadar, former chairman of local Union Parishad Abdul Gani, Prof Abu Ahmed, Sheikh Maniru-zzaman Manu and NGO executives Shahidul Islam and Dr Nazrul Islam were present at the rally.

The DC said as per the commitment of the Prime Minister, distribution of khas lands will begin soon.

Hundreds of landless people at the rally cheered the chief guest's declaration and paid their gratitude to him.

At a huge gathering at Debishahar on August 8, the then opposition leader Begum Khaleda Zia promised to distribute khas lands among landless people if BNP goes to power.

The government in an order asked the district administration to take action so that the landless people can get khas lands, official sources said.

Several clashes took place in the area in the past as some influential people tried to grab government lands. In ion such clash, Zaheda Khatun, 35, a landless woman, was killed on July 27, 1998.
