3 Dinajpur municipal staff held for cheque ‘forgery’

Three employees of Dinajpur municipality, arrested for alleged cheque forgery and trying to draw Tk7.5 lakh from a bank, have been sent to jail.

The arrested persons are Chief Accountant Motahar Hossain, Assistant Accountant Zahidul Haque and employees Hasinuzzaman and Alamgir Kabir Bulbul.

On July 30, Motahar Hossain went to Sonali Bank Corporate Branch to cash a cheque for Tk 7.5 lakh from the municipality's account.

The bank official suspected that the municipal chairman's signature on the cheque was forged. He immediately checked it with the municipal chairman and confirmed that his (chairman's) signature was forged.

Later on the day, Municipal Chairman Shafiqul Haque Chhutu filed a case with Sadar thana police accusing Chief Accountant Motahar Hossain, Assistant Accountant Zahidul Haque and employees Hasinuzzaman and Alamgir Kabir Bulbul. They were arrested at night and produced before a Magistrate court next day, which sent them to jail.

When contacted, the Municipal Chairman yesterday admitted the incident and said an inquiry committee has been formed to probe the matter.

Police said that during interrogation Motahar Hossain and Zahidul Haque confessed to the cheque forgery.
