Student abducted for ransom in Meherpur

Criminals abducted a student from Jhaubaria village in Sadar upazila in Meherpur district early yesterday and demanded Tk 5 lakh ransom.

According to police, a gang stormed into the house of Abdus Sattar, confined all family members into a room and looted cash Tk 25,000 and ornaments worth about Tk. 1 lakh.

Then the gang picked up Sattar's son Firoj Kabir Lablu, 17, who passed the SSC (Secondary School Certificate) examination this year.

Latter the gang demanded payment of Tk 5 lakh in two days for Lablu's release.

They also threatened the family not to inform police.

The family yesterday filed a case with the Meherpur Sadar police station.

When contacted, Meherpur police said they were trying to trace the victim and arrest the abductors.

As many as 31 people including school and college students and businessmen were abducted from different areas in Meherpur district since January this year.

Of them five were killed, two remained untraced and the rest bought their freedom.
