Colleges fight over students' admission

Non-government colleges can not admit adequate number of students as the two government colleges are taking in students beyond the limit fixed by the education ministry, the plaintiffs alleged in the case filed with a court here on Wednesday.

The government colleges facing the charge are Government Shahid Bulbul College and Pabna Government Women's College.

The non-government colleges which jointly filed the case include Adarsha Mohila College, Samsul Huda College, City College, Shahid M Monsur Ali Degree College, Shahid Shadhan College, Imam Gazzali School and College, Khaer Suti School and College and Dogachi School and College. All these are in Pabna Sadar upazila.

The plaintiffs claimed that the Education Ministry earlier fixed a limit of 150 students to be enrolled by an intermediate college in each section. But the Government Bulbul College has issued a notice that it has 350 seats in science faculty and 250 each in humanities and business management faculties.

Likewise, the Pabna Government Women's College is also admitting students more than its capacity, the plaintiffs alleged.

The court on the same day issued show-cause notices on the two government colleges, court sources said.

When contacted, authorities of the two government colleges said some name-only colleges are trying to lure brilliant students by promising facilities though these lack adequate trained teachers and required infrastructures. The government should also look into this, they said.

A large number of students who passed the SSC (Secondary School certificate) examination this year are trying for admission to good colleges in the district.
