Avilash Chakma on 5-day remand

Avilash Chakma, 32, a notorious criminal, was taken on five days' remand yesterday in connection with the murder of Biru Chakma, a former member of Shanti Bahini, in April.

Avilash is also the prime accused in the case for abduction of three foreign nationals from Kalapahar in Ranagamati in 2001. He was the mastermind behind the abduction, police said earlier.

Avilash was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on August 14 from Lal Dighirpar area in Chittagong and handed over to Naniarchar police on the following day, police said.

Police had prayed for 10 days' remand but First Class Magistrate Zahir Raihan granted five days' remand.

Avilash of Hazachhari village in Naniarchar uapazila faces nine cases for crimes including murders, abduction and extortion. He was absconding for long, police said.
