'Amend colonial laws to protect child rights'

Speakers at workshop here yesterday called for strict implementation of laws to safeguard child rights. Mere enactment of laws will not ensure the rights. Creating public awareness can achieve the desired goal, they said at the workshop on 'Create Awareness and Ensure Child Rights', organised jointly by a international NGO World Vision and local NGOs--Sodesh, Gender Development Forum and CEDO.

It was held at Sadar upazila auditorium with World Vision's Satkhira Program Manager Peter Costa in the chair.

Sadar Upazila Social Welfare Oofficer was the chief guest while Editor of local daily the Satkhira Chitra, Anisur Rahman, was the special guest.

The participants included former lawmaker Snigdha Haque, journalist Mizanur Rahman, Prof. Pabitra Mohon Das, lawyers Tapan Kumar Chakraborty and Prasad Kumar, Shawkat Hossain, municipal commissioner Shafiquddowla Sagar, Yarab Hossain and Madhab Dutta.

They said the laws framed by colonial rulers must be changed because those do not suit present day needs.
