Diarrhoea in Kishoreganj kills 3, attacks 1,500

The dead are Sweety, 7, daughter Ali Newaj of Mollapara village, Ismail, 2, son of Murshed Mia of Shewra village and Dolly, 4, daughter of Akkas Ali of Nowbad village.

The disease is spreading fast in Mollapara and Rashidabad villages and Kalapara area, sources said.

About 350 patients are taking treatment at the 100-bed Kishoreganj Sadar Modern Hospital which has only 20 beds in the diarrhoea ward, hospital sources said.

While visiting the hospital, this correspondent found many patients are lying on the floor of the ward in bitter cold. Many relatives of diarrhea patients complained to this correspondent that they purchase the medicines prescribed by doctors from outside the hospital. 'We only get oral saline from the hospital', they said.

When contacted, Kishoreganj Civil Surgeon said, two medical teams are working round the clock in the area.
