Drug smuggler flees jail custody

A notorious drug smuggler of Godagari who was being treated at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) fled yesterday.

Anwarul Islam, an inmate of Rajshahi Central Jail was shifted to RMCH following complaints of abdomen ailment on Thursday. But he made his good after going to toilet without 'dandaberi' (shakles). He was under care of four prison guards.

Two jail guards were suspended after the incident.

Anwarul is an accused in a drug-related case of Savar in Dhaka. Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members rounded him up along with one kilogram of heroin and Tk 1.5 lakh in cash from SA Paribahan courier service office on December 20.
