Poaching of nine Sundarbans deer sparks protest
The OC along with members of his family and four Jubo Dal men allegedly entered the forest through Angtihara police outpost of Koira upazila for picknicking. He took permission neither from any superior officer of his department nor from any officer of the forest department, sources said.
The group included president of Paikgacha upazila unit of Jubo Dal Amjad Hossain Golder and a prominent shrimp trader. It is alleged that the deer were slaughtered at Angtihara police camp on the night of January 24.
OC Enamul Huq, when contacted, refuted allegation of slaughtering nine deer and distributing venison among his favorites.
Acting Superintendent of Police Gazi Jashimuddin told this correspondent that ASP Nazrul Islam is heading the probe committee. The OC did not take my permission to remain absent from the police station for three days, he said.
The conservator of forests Altaf Hossain alleged that OC Enamul Huq violated the Forest Act by going to the Sundarbans without permission.
Meanwhile, leaders of Khulna Nagorik Shamaj formed human chain on Thursday and Friday to lodge protest against slaughtering of nine deer.
Later, they held a rally at the Picture Palace cinema hall square.
